    Gun Outfit at Rhinoceropolis

Given the band's hometown of Olympia and its shambolic arrangement of slacked-out fuzz, post-punk propulsion, and singer Dylan Sharp’s mumbling, detached, Calvin Johnson baritone, it’s a real shock to turn over Gun Outfit’s debut, Dim Light, and not find the old familiar K Records logo. Gun Outfit mines a rich vein of ragged cool that’s been underground since the early ’80s (a touch of Dinosaur Jr. spatter here, a bit of Sebadoh’s go-for-broke verve there, topped off with a hint of Meat Puppets’ calm delirium), but its fluid rhythms and caked-on scuzz also make it a contemporary of bands like No Age, which puts it right at home on that group’s Post Present Medium label. It just released Gun Outfit's latest, Possession Sound, which finds the band tempering its approach a bit.
