Howie Day and Serena Ryder at Fox Theatre
Singer-songwriter Howie Day has endured the kind of bumpy career and personal life that seems contradictory to the sweet subjects of his soft-rock ballads. After signing to Epic in 2002, Day released Stop All The World Now; initial reception was tepid until the album’s 2004 single “Collide.” (The song’s popularity was due in part to its appearance on several prime-time hospital shows including ER, Scrubs, and Grey’s Anatomy.) A series of arrests and trips to rehab—a 2007 stint romantically linked him to a then-married Britney Spears—marred Day’s reputation, as well as postponed a follow-up record. With a six-year gap between albums, Day returned in 2009 with Sound The Alarm, a collection of introspective acoustic-led songs that follow his signature vocal vulnerability.
