Jimmy Eat World and We Were Promised Jetpacks at Ogden Theatre
Three albums and nearly a decade after “The Middle” made Jimmy Eat World a platinum-selling band, it’s looking less and less likely that the group will recapture the heights attained by that song. That’s not a knock against Jimmy Eat World’s solid, if characteristically hit or miss, work since then. Both 2004’s Futures and 2007’s Chase This Light had moments that ranked among the band’s best, and the new Invented more or less follows suit. Although it lacks standout tracks like “Let It Happen” or “Kill” from its immediate predecessors, Invented finds the band continuing to explore mood, particularly on the title track and “Mixtape,” which shift dynamics over the course of more than six minutes. Invented likely won’t send Jimmy Eat World back up the charts, but it’s another in a series of reliably strong albums.
