Julian Casablancas at Ogden Theatre
Julian Casablancas knows a thing or two about the zeitgeist. As frontman for The Strokes, he ushered in last decade’s rock revival—tight jeans, dirty hair, drugged-out swagger—before taking on a lower profile after the band's maligned 2006 album, First Impressions Of Earth. Casablancas’ first solo outing, 2009’s Phrazes For The Young, is a set of electro-pop songs that casts away Lower East Side grit in favor of industrial influence, electronic flutters, and the pounding of drum machines. It’s a change in direction, but Casablancas’ torn voice is just as much an object of bewilderment, managing to mesmerize even when it’s on the verge of falling apart.
