Justin Townes Earle and Joe Pug at Bluebird Theater
Sons of the famous never have it easy, and Justin Townes Earle is doubly fucked: His father is Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle, while his middle name is a tribute to fellow Texas icon Townes Van Zandt. You can somewhat forgive him for buckling under the pressure and spending a few years shooting up on the streets. But just like dear old dad, Earle managed to kick the habit and saddle up a different horse for his debut album, 2008’s The Good Life, a wise-beyond-his-years collection of vintage country ballads time-warped in from some ancient roadhouse jukebox. 2009’s Midnight At Movies carries on much of the same forlorn Americana sound, but is mixed with a more slightly modern influence, as heard on Earle’s cover of The Replacements’ “Can’t Hardly Wait.”
