Manchester Orchestra, Harrison Hudson, and El Toro De La Muerte at Black Sheep
Lots of bands pop up in high school, and nearly all qualify as “indie rock,” because the average fan base consists of whoever is packed into their friends’ basement that night. Then there’s Manchester Orchestra, which followed its muse more loyally than most: Frontman Andy Hull opted for home-schooling his senior year to focus on the group’s music. The results couldn’t have been better: The Orchestra’s debut full-length, I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child, is full of brainy storytelling overlaid with rousing, raw hooks. The follow-up Mean Everything To Nothing keeps it going, proving Hull’s got the talent for the long haul.
