Mason Jennings and Nathaniel Rateliff And The Wheel at Fox Theatre
Mason Jennings' status as an independent musician has always been part of his appeal: What the folk-rock troubadour lost in the publicity and radio play that comes with being on a major, he gained in an unfettered ability to make earnest, emotionally rich albums the way he saw fit. So it was a little surprising when Jennings signed with Epic via Glacial Pace, the imprint of Isaac Brock. Subsequently, when 2006's Boneclouds failed to break Jennings’ to a wider audience, he was dropped from the label. Kindred spirit Jack Johnson picked up 2008’s In The Ever for his label Brushfire—which also released this year’s electric guitar-laden Blood Of Man—proving a more fitting home for Jennings' warm and thoughtful tunes.
