Matt Morris and John Common And Blinding Flashes Of Light at Bluebird Theater

Matt Morris’ debut full-length, When Everything Breaks Open, broke to a lot of hype: Production by Justin Timberlake and Charlie Sexton, appearances by Morris on Ellen and Letterman, a mountain of Denver press. With so much expectation, the record was doomed from the start to middling reviews. But was it a bad album? No. (It wasn’t a great album, either.) Its worst offense—and the most damning aspect to some—is that it drips in singer-songwriter sap and is almost too accessible to be interesting. But at its best, Everything is a slickly produced solo effort that promises bigger (and better?) things for the future.
