Midlake and Matthew And The Arrogant Sea at Bluebird Theater
It’s a hard thing to be compared to Radiohead: Sure, it sounds good on paper, but it can also be a pretty tall order. Texas act Midlake, which made indie-world waves in 2006 with the excellent The Trials Of Van Occupanther, initially came out sounding, yes, like a folky Radiohead. But the band has continued to push even further with its jazzy indie rock that’s easily as intricate and fussy as high-period Fleetwood Mac. The new The Courage Of Others is atmospheric and confessional, full of deep-woods campfire harmonies and more than a few heavy-hearted mind-drops. Opener Matthew And The Arrogant Sea is a mix of brass-band instrumentation and electronic trickery, slotted nicely alongside the pysch-folk of Animal Collective.
