Mimicking Birds, Calvin Locklear, and Hikes at Hi-Dive
Portland’s Mimicking Birds is the home recording project of Nate Lacy, whose chiming, ghostly, finger-picked acoustic folk offers some of the same pastoral hush and campfire comforts as fellow mountaineers Fleet Foxes. Lacy had buzz before he even had a band or a record, thanks to Isaac Brock bringing him on tour—and doing a lot more than that off stage. The Modest Mouse frontman basically took Lacy under his wing, signing him to his Glacial Pace imprint and producing Mimicking Birds' self-titled debut. Released in March, it maintains the sparse, personal feel of Lacy's home-recording roots, though it occasionally threatens to retreat too far into the background.
