Mono and The Twilight Sad at Bluebird Theater
With its layers of atmosphere, wavering guitar, and soft-timbered strings, Mono is something like a Japanese counterpart to Explosions In The Sky. Its eerie, explosive instrumentalism typically follows a formula of quiet, opening rumbles followed by breaking-through-cloud distortion, climaxing in ebbing showers of noise—a schematic that the band embraces better than most. Which is why 2009’s Steve Albini-produced Hymn To The Immortal Wind doesn’t rewrite Mono’s playbook, but rather adapts it into a blockbuster drama, complete with a chamber orchestra to translate those formerly cracked emotions into glistening, string-laden swells. The stunning live effect was as well captured on the just-released album and accompanying movie Holy Ground: NYC Live With The Wordless Music Orchestra.
