Needtobreathe, Stephen Kellogg And The Sixers, and Seabird at Bluebird Theater
Needtobreathe yearns for a sweeping, hooky impact in an odd pile-up of sounds that nonetheless always adds up to dependably harmless. Sometimes the band’s South Carolina origins show through in rootsy instrumentation or the occasional twang in Bear Rinehart’s sticky-throated vocals; sometimes it eagerly blends in with any number of shiny adult-contempo pop acts; and sometimes there’s even a bit of rocking angst or U2-inspired grandstanding. It seems like a lot of strain for something so bland, but at least there’s a bit of variety at work—2009’s The Outsiders boasts help from three producers who’ve separately worked with acts from Wilco to John Mayer.
