Old 97's and David Wax Museum at Gothic Theatre
For most of the past 17 years, the Old 97's have escaped easy classification by churning out album after album of bouncy power pop coated with a patina of alt-country rootsiness. The listenable formula works, and 2008's Blame It On Gravity is a testament to this consistency: It's enjoyable top-to-bottom, even though it breaks little, if any, new ground. The Texas-based quartet may not be reinventing itself in the studio, but they have been injecting pop-country style into the veins of a few rocks classics. On the new covers EP Mimeograph, the Old 97's give a collection of artists—including David Bowie and R.E.M—a unique re-imagining, laying down country bounce and twang where it's least expected.
