Paper Bird, These United States, and Dovekins at Hi-Dive
Self-described maker of “joyful” music, the genre bender Paper Bird fluxes from past to present with a percussion-less combination of softened harmonies, deep trombone/upright bass, and old-timey banjo picking. The blend of bluegrass, folk, and tweeish pop on 2009’s EP A Sky Underground has built a big local following in Colorado, as well as garnered the band some national attention. Opener These United States’ earnest Western rock provides the perfect complement to Paper Birds' neo-vintage sound. Made up of five D.C.-area musicians, the band is often joined by a rotating cast of friends, such as folk artist Paleo. Everything Touches Everything, the group’s latest, pays tribute to their folk and roots sound, channeling everything from Whiskeytown to Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.
