Pretty And Nice at Larimer Lounge
Boston’s Pretty And Nice is really neither. Even a perfunctory listen to albums like 2008’s Get Young reveals a sound that’s scuzzy, menacing, and leaking fried circuitry. The band buries post-punk hooks under feverish ranting and the trash-can clang of robotic electro, but there’s a punk approach underlying those fast, frenzied indie leanings. Riffs are spot-welded to jerky beats, and the whole sound hinges on a gleeful self-deconstruction that stands up against some of the best dance-punk produced so far. As for actually dancing to Pretty And Nice’s music: Go ahead and give it a shot. But don’t send the band your hospital bills when you dislocate half your body.
