Primal Fear, Havok, and Silencer at Bluebird Theater
Many of Wisconsin's boozy little towns could serve as potent petri dishes for metal bands to arise and multiply, but an act from Madison, of all places, got a chance to break out a bit this year. Luna Mortis teamed with big-name metal label Century Media to release its recent album, The Absence, a powerful collision of goth-metal melodrama and precise death-metal hammering. Brian Koenig's songwriting and fluid guitar leads meld in a fierce dynamic with vocalist Mary Zimmer, who switches deftly between operatic melodies and an enviable death-growl. Onstage, Zimmer's more likely to retch down into the crowd than preen above it, which helps to give lofty songs like "Ruin" and "Never Give In" more down-to-earth punch.
