Quiet Corral, The Yawpers, and Nate King at Larimer Lounge

Lawrence, Kansas’ Quiet Corral really stumbled onto something—that’s been labeled “Americana chamber folk”—with the song “Thieves,” off its 2010 self-titled EP. It’s an incredibly jaunty mixture of tight pop structures and dusty instrumentation with some Black Heart Procession gloom stirred in for extra gravity. The band’s new single, “City Steep,” finds a much more languorous feel amid stomping percussion, mostly showcasing singer Jesse Braswell Roberts’ rusty voice, until the rock chords open things up for piano jamming and a big finish. It’s a curious hybrid that should appease fans of bluegrass, folk, and rock ’n’ roll alike.
