Regina Spektor and Jupiter One at Fillmore Auditorium
Regina Spektor’s eclectic sound is no doubt a result of her unique upbringing. She spent the first decade of her life in Moscow, before being transplanted to the Bronx where she cultivated her own repertoire of jangly anti-folk. Spektor’s classical piano training—along with some diverse exposure in the bars and clubs of Manhattan—eventually led to opening slots for The Strokes (with whom she recorded an early collaboration). This year’s Far doesn’t stray too much from 2006’s Begin To Hope; her tender ballads remain at once familiar and unusual, working like pained arias sung with quiet folkie conviction and lots of pop idiosyncrasy.
