Rocky Votolato, Adam Stephens, and Chad Price at Hi-Dive
Rocky Votolato began his career in power-pop band Waxwing—an outfit that featured his sibling and ex-Blood Brother Cody—but he has since moved on to much quieter singer-songwriter fare built around his voice and (usually) an acoustic guitar. His first stretch into solo territory happened to coincide with the great Dashboard Confessional avalanche of the early 2000s, and though Votolato could have easily been buried with it, he has managed to forge ahead nearly unscathed. And his music has only grown fuller with time: 2007’s The Brag & Cuss opted for alt-country instrumentation rather than the stripped-down starkness heard on previous works, and the new True Devotion is an even more concerted effort, replete with back-up vocals and catchy lo-fi beats.
