Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings and Darrell Scott at Boulder Theater

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings made their name by grinding it out onstage—very often and for very long stretches of time. Their legacy could be said to trace back to the ’60s, but that’s just the sound of it: Jones and her band do little to differentiate themselves from the kind of old soul and funk records that thrived in, say, 1968. After channeling James Brown on their first album in 2002 and Fela Kuti on their 2005 sophomore release, Naturally, Jones & The Dap-Kings continued their mastery of retro R&B on 2007’s 100 Days, 100 Nights, an album that dabbles nicely in slow-simmering gospel. The forthcoming I Learned The Hard Way goes back to Jones’ rubbery, soulful roots with plenty of smart-aleck horns and cooing back-up vocals.
