Split Lip Rayfield at Aggie Theater

A blistering string band for the punk-rock and outlaw-country crowd, Split Lip Rayfield went from badass to poignantly heroic in 2006: After guitarist Kirk Rundstrom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and various treatments failed him, he got back enough strength to keep touring and recording, playing furious, packed shows almost right up to his death in 2007. The man’s dedication makes the loss even sadder, and the band hasn’t tried to replace him. Singer-mandolinist Wayne Gottstine, banjo player Eric Mardis, and Jeff Eaton—who plays a bass made from a truck’s gas tank—have continued to tour as a trio, and recently put out their first album since Rundstrom’s death, I’ll Be Around, fittingly dedicated to Rundstrom.
