Stone Temple Pilots at Fillmore Auditorium

Stone Temple Pilots’ position in the pantheon of ’90s alt-rock may be shrouded in a haze of singer Scott Weiland’s notorious drug problems and repeated arrests, but the band’s pseudo-grunge anthemic rock has carried over and beyond the era’s skuzzy, sobriety-challenged days. The band’s rise from the San Diego scene was largely due to the hypnotic devotion of its greasy, head-banging fans—most early critics, by contrast, dismissed them as unimaginative Pearl Jam imitators—and, even without a new album in eight years, these same eager devotees have demanded STP’s return. The quartet may not be as spry as in its earlier days, but concertgoers can rest assured that they’ll still hear beloved classics.
