Trashcan Sinatras, Brookville, and Tyler Despres at Larimer Lounge

Trashcan Sinatras seemed poised for a Crowded House-style crossover to the adult-contemporary mainstream way back in 1990 with its debut album, Cake. But the winds of change weren't kind to the Scottish band, which played sensitive, funny, witty pop throughout the grunge and post-grunge eras. By the time 1996's A Happy Pocket came out, it couldn't even get released in America. (Too bad, because it's incredible.) Following an eight-year period of near-inactivity, the band came back as gently as ever with 2004's Weightlifting, and its fifth album, In The Music, will be released this fall. It features backing vocals from Carly Simon on one track, so let that be your guide—but don't let it scare you off. These songs are sappy in the best way.
