Valient Thorr, Early Man, and Speed Wolf at Larimer LoungeLarimer Lounge 2721 Larimer St, Denver/Boulder, CO
Valient Thorr—kind of an understated, Viking-themed version of GWAR, complete with colorful stage names and a mythical backstory—plays a wink-nudge strain of cock-rock indebted to Kiss and Ted Nugent. Not surprisingly, the group, out behind 2008’s Immortalizer, draws a devoted fan base, calling themselves “thorriors.” Opener Early Man plays retro-minded metal that isn’t original by any stretch, wailing and crushing with an unabashedly Ozzy-aping vocal howl. But that seems to be the point: The band’s 2005 debut, Closing In, and 2008 EP, Beware The Circling Fin, perfectly distill the kind of ’70s and ’80s heavy metal played by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. It’s out now previewing its Jack Endino produced follow-up, Death Potion, due in 2010.
