The Watching Hour: Turkey Shoot at Starz FilmCenter
In 1982, director Brian Trenchard-Smith pictured the future to be a bleak one. The low-budget Turkey Shoot, set (now almost laughably) in the year 2000 is framed in the aftermath of an unnamed holocaust; what’s left of humanity has been herded by an indiscriminate government into immense rehabilitation/prison camps, mostly for the vicious sport and morbid enjoyment of the camp leaders. It’s pure sci-fi cheese—an oppressive authority and the struggle of the working-class innocents is a fairly standard theme—but isn’t that always the stuff of cult classics?
