Denver author Mario Acevedo has continually bent the vampire mythos to fit his storylines: Felix Gomez (vampire P.I.!) was bit during a tour of duty in Iraq—Acevedo himself served in Desert Storm—but can operate in daylight by applying appropriate make-ups and creams. The undead Gomez returns in Werewolf Smackdown, Acevedo’s fifth installment of the satirical detective/horror series, leaving Denver for South Carolina to take on battling werewolves. Rival clans are fighting for control of the low-country territory, and are threatening to reveal the Great Secret (the existence of paranormal creatures) to the human world.
