The Whigs and Band Of Skulls at Boulder Theater
The Whigs, from Athens, Ga., charge wildly and eagerly into tight, noisy pop hooks. Their 2008 album, Mission Control, nods at the likes of The Strokes, The Raspberries, Foo Fighters, and The Replacements—cockiness very much included. The Whigs’ best stuff draws heavily on bombastic guitar and drum work, while retaining a mind for wry, slightly clever songwriting. The new In The Dark—which saw the departure of bassist/co-songwriter Hank Sullivant—seems to lack in the band’s earlier panache, but does pull through with a few bright and energetic spots.
