Willie Nelson and Ryan Bingham at Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Willie Nelson is among the few artists who can claim status both as country royalty and Nashville-neglected outlaw, and who's also ventured outside the genre without betraying it. His sturdy yet smooth voice kept the charm intact as he expanded into albums that treated country, jazz, and pop as parts of the same comfortably familiar territory, right up through 2009’s Blue Note release American Classic. Nelson and producer T-Bone Burnett were either going for a re-centering or a dash of sly irony with the title of the new Country Music. It opens with an old Nelson original, “Man With The Blues,” then proceeds back through the country songbook, revisiting traditional gospel numbers like “Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down” and songs from elder country gods such as Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb.
