Untangling ska’s traditions from those of mods, skinheads, and punks is pretty impossible; for some reason, disaffected white kids in England have historically been drawn to the soulful sounds of Jamaica, and particularly the proto-reggae wiggle of ’60s ska. It took longer for American punks to catch on, but when they did, they had a tendency to mutilate the music. The Aggrolites, though, are about as good as Stateside ska gets. 2007’s Reggae Hit L.A. is a 16-track blast of faithful, righteously skanking soul swimming in Jackie Mittoo-worthy organ and thunderous reverb. The Aggrolites also served as the backing band on the solo debut of Rancid’s Tim Armstrong, whose Hellcat Records releases the group’s new IV the day before this show.
