Step into the 404 at the right time, and you’ll feel like you just stumbled into a remake of Cocoon. Every so often, old folks from a local home get bussed in to partake of the place’s unapologetically antiquated menu, not to mention the Eisenhower-era prices on the lunch specials. Which is exactly why everyone should go there. Opened more than 50 years ago, the 404 has been a home away from home for teamsters, lushes, and drinking buddies as the Baker neighborhood has evolved around it. With its recently opened extra dining room, the bar is now neatly split in two: classy room on one side, rowdy pool hall on the other. By either route, the 404’s famous steak selection and no-nonsense comfort food is absolutely timeless.
