A.V. Video A.V. Sessions: Screamin' Cyn-Cyn And The Pons' "Special"

There’s something a little sinister about Screamin’ Cyn-Cyn And The Pons. To those who know the Madison pop-punk pranksters, they are the cuddliest band around, and their childlike enthusiasm translates to electric live performances complete with alarming costumes and make-up. Songs like “Cap’n Friendship” and “Trophy Case,” off the new Damn, Girl, convey real depth of emotion, albeit in the band’s wacky way. But then tracks like “Special”—a creepy love letter set to a thumping rhythm section, crunchy guitars, and ominous piano plunking—seem to suggest a darker, hidden meaning. The stuttering charge of Steve Shah’s unrelenting drums, the taunting back-up vocals of Cynthia and Christian Burnson, and the villainous operatic swells in Shane O’Neil’s voice seem like a perfect soundtrack for tying someone to the railroad tracks while cackling and twirling your mustache. Turns out the song is based on a famous villain’s relationship with another pretty popular guy. Stick around to the end of the video—filmed live at DNA Music Labs—to hear O’Neil explain it.
