Ballot Blasters: Deadline for withdrawal

Decider's 2008 local music platform

united sons of toil album cover The United Sons Of Toil's latest album cover looks ahead to a brave (or bleak?) future.
Need a little help getting motivated to trudge out to the polling place on Nov. 4? Decider has weighed the issues and scoured some of 2008’s finer local music for inspiration.

If its lyrics were a little easier to make out, The United Sons Of Toil’s second CD might sound like a cookbook of repression and futility. Titled Until Lions Have Their Historians, Tales Of The Hunt Shall Always Glorify The Hunter, it’s a harsh, big-sounding math-rock album obsessed with imperialism, exploitation, and genocide. “Simplify, Semper Fi” is a tale of weak populations crushed in the course of “nation building.” Doesn’t it seem a little strange that whatever the powerful are selling—be it democracy, prosperity, or religion—innocent people lose out horribly, often fatally? As the band screams on the bridge, “What have we learned from this?”
