Dick The Bruiser's Kevin Wade might actually be getting at something in his lyrics, but he seems more preoccupied with forming coarse word-patterns that grind on the shards of an idea. Similarly, the duo's Severe Songs EP relies on Wade’s prongs of bass, Tony Sellers’ rhythm-chopping drums, and little else, except for an occasional squiggle from Wade’s theremin. The two sound so happy to plod their way through the scorched earth on “Vampire State” that the song evokes the right’s gloating lust for domestic oil (and blood). Consider the first verse: “I’m gonna find you, and eat you / I’m gonna eat you, complete you / I’m gonna take you, remake you / I’m gonna drain you, deplete you.” Here’s hoping the band’s available for apocalypse parties, or for the next screening of The Road Warrior. Whichever comes first.
