Belly Up Beat the winter blues with chocolates and booze

The smug satisfaction of seeing New York pummeled repeatedly by crushing snowstorms will have to take a break as the Wisconsin winter blahs were suddenly cranked up to 11 on Tuesday night. But if depression threatens, a splash of decadence can beat the blues back: Savoir Faire Cards & Gifts (5 N. Pinckney St., 608-819-8066) will host a chocolate and jam tasting on Feb. 5 from 12-4 p.m. Kris Kalb of The Spirit Of Wisconsin will present specialty chocolates and jams infused with local distillery Yahara Bay spirits, and pair the food with three champagnes. Expect trifles like apple brandy truffles with caramel in chocolate ganache and white rum in chocolate lined with molasses. Yahara Bay is the first distillery in the U.S to make and bottle Limoncella, which is folded into a dark chocolate shell to produce “lemon drop cremes.” The Spirit Of Wisconsin uses only Wisconsin ingredients, something to keep in mind when sampling the vodka cranberry rhubarb jelly or rum daiquiri jam with strawberries and lime. How’s that for a decadent mental getaway?

FATSOMETER: 7. These aren’t the disgusting booze-filled airport-bought upchuck-inducers that Uncle Bert used to bring for the holidays, but rather finely crafted chocolates and jams made from top-notch local ingredients. As it’s a tasting, limited quantities will prevent extreme overindulgence.
