For some, Easter is simply a Sunday spent chomping on chocolate rabbits, building a jellybean buzz, and then finishing with a stomachache. For others, this rite of spring is a cultural experience to be prepared for all year. Take the Polish Heritage Club of Wisconsin. Every year, the PHC invites the public to celebrate this important holiday in the best way possible: with lots of food. The annual Spring Festival (held Sunday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish’s Marion Hall in Monona) is well known for its hearty luncheon of kielbasa served with those little pockets of carbohydrate heaven, pierogi. Work off the food coma by browsing the booths, where you’ll find such traditional Polish baked goods as the sweet, rich bread called babka. Even if you don’t have ties to the motherland (or Easter, for that matter), good food is always a reason to celebrate.
Fatsometer: 9. The Polish have a long heritage of hearty eating, so skip breakfast and save the Peeps for Easter Sunday.
