Bricks Theatre to hold next play, The Mercy Seat, beneath high-rise condominium
Capitol West condominium at 309 W. Washington Ave.
The Bricks Theatre’s next production, The Mercy Seat, a drama about love, honesty, and selfishness set in the days after September 11, will no doubt gain some emotional gravity from its choice of venue. The play, running Thursdays through Saturdays with one Sunday matinee, March 3-12, will be held in an unfinished commercial storefront beneath the Capitol West condominiums.
“The atmosphere (mostly concrete and pillars) is a great compliment to the story and characters, as it sits bare, like a blank canvas with many possibilities,” is how a recent press release describes the unusual venue discovered by producer David Pausch in partnership with The Alexander Company. Not that the tragedy of 9/11 has faded from America’s collective conscious, or that Neil LaBute’s powerhouse play doesn’t already rip the audience’s guts out, but adding the eerily World Trade Center-like setting means there probably won’t be a dry eye in the house.
Tickets are $20, for sale online.
