Cart Capades #2: Ayam bakar and a Minneola tangelo

tangelo

Welcome to Cart Capades, in which Decider will attempt to eat at all the food carts that hit downtown Madison during the warmer months and report back on what's tasty, what's crappy, and the outdoor-lunch experience in general. This week, we hit the Library Mall's Kakilima Indonesian trailer and the fruit stand.

Main course: Kakilima’s daily special when Decider last visited was ayam semur—chicken, veggies, and sweet soy sauce—but Decider opted to play it close to the vest and order ayam bakar off the regular menu. It’s a simple barbecue chicken dish served over rice, and flecks of coconut and a side of pickled carrots add nice flavor accents. Decider loaded it all up with a healthy dose of the cart-side hot sauce, later paying the price with some serious heartburn. Overall, Kakilima’s small menu is redeemed by its massive portions.

Beverage: Boring bottled water.

Dessert: A Minneola tangelo from the fruit stand. Decider had no idea what it was, but thought this bell-shaped fruit looked good. Our crack research team tells us it’s a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, and our taste-buds tell us it’s a delicious and not-too-sweet orangey amalgam.

Orange piccolo guy selections: Sesame Street theme. Yes, again.
