Cinematheque announces spring schedule, needs our help to keep going

UW’s Cinematheque announced its spring schedule recently and, it suffices to say, it will more than make up for that time we went with mom to see Jack And Jill. Next semester’s season kicks off with a première from Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, The Turin Horse (Jan. 20, 7 p.m.), which frames philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s final push toward insanity after witnessing a horse being viciously beaten. The excellent start to the programming in January wraps with Walter Hill’s The Driver (Jan. 30, 7 p.m.), a film that partially inspired 2011’s Drive, which in turn made Ryan Gosling look unbelievably cool and made everyone at The A.V. Club want to start walking around with a toothpick in our mouths.
The great programming continues well into May and includes more films you wish you already liked such as François Truffaut’s The Bride Wore Black (April 14, 7 p.m.) and Johnnie To’s The Heroic Trio (March 26, 7 p.m.) But as the Isthmus recently pointed out, further redemptive cinematic viewings courtesy of the benevolent souls at Cinematheque could be in jeopardy. According to programming director Jim Healy, the series is up against funding cuts and needs to get $30,000 together by the end of the year. So let’s give them our money already.
According to the Isthmus, donations can be made online at uwfoundation.wisc.edu. “In the designation field, select ‘other.’ In the information field, be sure to write ‘Friends of Film Fund.’”
