Chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon are the light and dark Gemini twins of the wine world. Chardonnay is a titan in the realm of whites, and ranges from buttery, to willowy, to powerfully oaky. Cabernet sauvignon is perhaps the most massive of all varietals, equally complex and heavy. Both will face off against appetizer pairings in a wine tasting event at the seafood-centric Ocean Grill (117 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 608-285-2582) on Wednesday, March 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Executive Chef Eric Benedict plans to meet the challenge of these big wines with brie and bacon in puff pastry tarts, pan-seared prosciutto-wrapped scallops, slow braised beef ribs, and crab cakes with red bell pepper hollandaise. The wines hail from Casa Lapostolle, a winery known for applying French expertise to grape-growing in Chile. Tasting the two wines is free of charge; not so for the appetizers.
Fatsometer: 7. Light grazing and judicious sipping will cause no ill-will in the temple of the body; gorging on beef ribs and brie will have predictable effects.
