Dancing Choose: Salsa sass
Decider plots steps for those who just want to dance
Known as one of the most sensual, sexy dances around, salsa—and all of the hip gyrating, shoulder shimming, and close contact it entails—hits the Majestic Theatre yet again at this weekend's Salsa Saturday. Primarily a partner-driven dance, Salsa is a fusion of Caribbean and Latin American dance styles. Once you learn the basic back-and-forth steps, it's time to add some variation with twists, spins, turns, and handholds. It's a seven-step count—pause on four—with each step being a different movement, foot tap, or upper-body gesture. The 12-member band Grupo Candela and Madison's DJ Papi Love will provide the songs. Candela mixes its various members’ repertoires of fast-paced meringue, bachata, and cumbia styles. Papi Love, who’s known locally from his time spinning at the Cardinal Bar and in Spain and Brazil, should show off a good grasp of salsa hits new and old.
For: Folks with friends who tend to wimp out when it's salsa time. The $10 cover includes free lessons between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., so there’s no use for the "I don’t know how to" excuse. The lively combination of live band and DJ, and the fact that the event runs until bar time, should keep previously inhibited dancers snapping and sweating across the dance floor.
