Lake Mills supports about 5,000 people, the Tyranena Brewing Company, and is globally noted for nearby Aztalan State Park. Wisconsin residents interested in visiting the fascinating 1000-1300 AD settlement, with its impressive stockade, now have a great excuse to do a double-hitter day trip, since The Wine Vineyard Of Lake Mills (103 N. Main St., 920-648-5481) will be uncorking the wines of Fess Parker for a formal tasting on Saturday, Jan. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. (Fun fact: Parker played Davy Crockett for Disney in the ’50s and started a vineyard with the proceeds.) The 2009 Fortress Sauvignon Blanc by Parker was the recipient of a Gold Medal in the 2011 Houston Rodeo Uncorked International Wine Show, and Parker Chardonnays and Rieslings, which tend to score well with trade magazine Wine Enthusiast, will be opened, sniffed, and sampled. A sommelier type will be on hand to lead the tasting and dispense occasional pearls of wisdom like a languorous oyster, secure in a chitinous shell of oenological expertise. This day trip exploring educationally edifying archeological ruins followed by a character building bout of wine tasting will have anyone feeling both rugged and cultured, like Professor Indiana Jones.
FATSOMETER: 4. Plenty of hearty hiking around the ruins will burn calories and prime the pump for the wine tasting; it’s a low-fat no-lose situation.
