Bored of aimless browsing at Madison's popular farmers markets? In Stand By Your Stand, Decider heads out to find their best and strangest offerings, and tips on how to use them.
The source: Soldiers Grove, Wis.
Wares: Because it's winter, Driftless Organics currently has potatoes in blue, red, sweet, and German Butterball varieties; red, yellow, and cippolini onions; shallots; parsnips; garlic; and sunflower oil.
Best deal: Roots and tubers are pretty much always a good deal, but right now, 5 pounds of delicious local potatoes cost $7.
Weirdest item: Sunflower oil, pressed and bottled from the seeds of the farm's sunflower fields. Use like other oils for salads, stir frying, or baking.
Serving suggestion: Driftless Organics began life as Rainbow Potatoes, growing, as the name suggests, a full spectrum of colorful potatoes. Do not fear the multicolored potato, say co-owners Josh and Noah Engel. Nothing says potato salad with pizzazz (or perhaps Swedish pride) like one made with blue- and yellow-fleshed potatoes, or pile of blue mashed potatoes.
Find it at: Dane County Winter Farmers' Market, Saturdays, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Madison Senior Center through April 11.
