Freakfest 2009 announces semi-charmed music lineup
Third Eye Blind, getting pumped to frolic with the goblins and puke-puddles.
The annual State Street Halloween hoo-ha known lovingly as Freakfest 2009 announced its full music lineup today, and even though the calendar is inching closer to shutting the door on the ’00s, it'll feature a wormhole to 1997 courtesy of headliner Third Eye Blind. While this confirms our suspicions that Freakfest, going into its fourth year, has completely weird taste in big-name bands (there's nothing about "Jumper" that just screams "Gimme a Jell-O shot or I'll barf down your girlfriend's shirt!" to us), we will say that Third Eye Blind's put out its share of likeable music. Even as songs from 3EB's recent release, Ursa Major, clang up against Freakfest's eight-block trough of sloppy celebration, it should hold up a hell of a lot better than previous Freakfest headliners like Lifehouse (truly, yuck) and OAR. For those biased toward bands formed this century, the lineup will also include Cage The Elephant and Push Play on the Mountain Dew Amp Stage. The Brooklyn by-way-of-Madison Locksley (and sometimes Ray Davies backing band) will perform on the ridiculously over-sponsored WISC TV/MY Madison TV/ C3K Urban Theater Stage along with locals The Nod.
Even though it’s probably irrelevant to the level of debauchery that routinely takes place at this event, this year’s Freakfest falls on the actual Halloween date of Saturday, Oct. 31. So take that for what it’s worth and be thinking about how best to mine the current events landscape for that perfect costume idea that you and everyone else in the city will have at the exact same time.
