Get out to Bookless to party in the stacks of the Central Library Jan. 28
The Bookless “Party in the Stacks” goes down on January 28, and it looks to be a real humdinger, full of creative promise spiced with not a little mischief. Madison Public Library is tearing down the soon-to-be renovated Central Library building with a big, bomb the walls with graffiti, see ya later, sayonara sunset of the space before its resurrection. 50 local artists will occupy the now-empty space, devoid of books and stripped to the bone—perfect for an art party with a public painting wall and trippy, library-oriented conceptual art pieces. The hands-on and spectacle-oriented art activities will get a musical backdrop and there will be plenty of food by Madison locavore heroes Underground Kitchen, who are currently planning a no-doubt excellent menu. Great Dane will bring the beer; Merchant has created a special cocktail for the event, the Adult Fiction; and Dobra Tea will provide some warm beverages in its lounge on the first floor. The family free-for-all (10 a.m-2 p.m.) is free and the after-hours jam (7 p.m.-1 a.m.) is $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
FATSOMETER: 5. Neither too heavy nor too light guides art through the night. With art as the focus, getting buzzed on Crop Circle Wheat, chowing quality meat from the Underground Kitchen, and painting vibrant portraits of scurrilous alien beasts from the sky waving death-ray weapons in idealized color palettes will feel perfectly natural.
