Gomers announce new variety-show series at The Frequency
The Gomers' idea of a PowerPoint slide.
In a web-and-phone press conference so important three real-live local writers signed on for it Friday, Andy Wallman and Bliff Blumfumgagnge of weathered but eternally adolescent-at-heart local band The Gomers joined Darwin Sampson, owner of The Frequency, to announce yet another regular Gomers gig. In addition to their Rock Star Gomeroke spots at the High Noon Saloon, The Gomers will now be hosting the Slappy Hour Variety Special on the second and fourth Friday of every month at 5:30 p.m.
Touting their many "stupid achievements in this great city" while sharing PowerPoint slides via GoToMeeting, the two Gomers explained the happy-hour show will celebrate the band members' many side projects and the friends they've made. When the event kicks off next Friday, they'll welcome songwriter Sean Michael Dargan and Jonathan Zarov (who joins Blumfumgagnge in the band Yammer) as guests. Blumfumgagnge and friends will also be improvising live music to go with some of Harold Lloyd's silent comedy films, in a continuation of the live accompaniments Blumfumgagnge conjured up for Nosferatu and The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari earlier this year. On Dec. 26, The Gomers will get off the stage to make way for their pals in another local band, Lorenzo's Music.
Of course, the Gomers could've just sent out a concise press release like normal people, but the GoToMeeting deal shaped up like Gomers stage banter with extra visual aids. An image of Sean Connery in Zardoz popped up early in the PowerPoint, and Wallman groaned, "Hey Biff, we said no vacation pictures!" Another slide promised the event will be "Like lurking in The Gomers' living loving laboratory lounge!" And a female "CNN reporter" with a suspicious falsetto interrupted one of Decider's questions with one of her own. (Isthmus' Kenneth Burns and 77 Square's Katjusa Cisar were also on hand to endure the antics.) Of course, this quick-witted goof-offery bears out in The Gomers' music, so Slappy Hour should be worth a look.
