Whole Foods Market, Inc. was at one time the avatar of organic health food in the national consciousness, though its fortunes changed somewhat through a combination of public relations missteps, economic blowback, and people discovering how easy it is to winkingly call the place "Whole Paycheck." Luckily, Madison’s Whole Foods Market (3313 University Ave., 608-233-9566) seems to be in the giving mood with some excellent in-house eating activities. During its All Things Good Holiday Tasting on Nov. 14, food will be served buffet-style at no cost. Gruyere spinach, stuffed mushrooms, smoked salmon and roast beef canapés, coconut chicken, Thai peanut chicken skewers, crab cakes, and cheese boards will represent the appetizers; and the main course will include turkey, roast ham, and mashed potatoes. If you’re not already full, sample some pumpkin, apple, or cherry pies for dessert. Nosh first, then place an order for Thanksgiving. Brand maintenance never tasted so good.
Fatsometer: 10. You're can eat while shopping, eat more while you’re cooking, and then get after a little more eating when your meal is ready. Truly, this is what makes the holidays great.
