On Jan. 17 at 6 p.m., for the “Hail To The Ale” dinner held by The Coopers Tavern (20 W. Mifflin St., 608-256-1600), local brewery Ale Asylum will provide beer for the chefs at Coopers to cook with, and more for guests to drink alongside the resultant sudsy dishes. Short ribs braised in Ale Asylum’s Diablo Dubbel are matched with greens braised in Ale Asylum’s Ambergeddon and served with Ale Asylum’s Hopalicious in a glass, for drinking. That’s three beers in one course, and this is a four-course meal. Some of the pairings are rather clever: French onion soup with Ale Asylum’s Madtown Nut Brown will be served with Ale Asylum’s Gold Digger Blonde, and chocolate tart with Ale Asylum’s Mercy Grand Cru-imbued caramel will be set against Ale Asylum’s Big Slick Stout. A $50 bill is a bit steep, but keep in mind that it’s a whole lot of beer.
FATSOMETER: 8. Chasing beer-infused short ribs, caramel, and even croutons with more beer will lead to predictable results, and one of them is not magical weight loss.
