Belly Up Heidi ho neighbors! Get to New Glarus for a Swiss-style celebration

The Taste of New Glarus and Heidi Festival are a big deal in “Little Switzerland,” sleepy little home to the New Glarus Brewery and about 2,000 people. Once a year, the whole community rallies around a celebration of the Swiss heritage the town shares, which of course means Swiss food and multiple presentations of the play Heidi, that timeless work of yodeling and alphorns (those long Swiss pipes) played in unison. There will be plenty of food and drink throughout the festival in the Village Park and in various New Glarus eateries, such as the Maple Leaf Cheese and Chocolate Haus. There are also a few official chow-downs: The Lions Club will host a BBQ dinner Friday, June 24 at 5 p.m. The Taste of New Glarus—with Swiss snacks like Rahm schnitzel, kartoffelsalat (potato salad), and fondue—runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 downtown. The drama of Heidi will play at 7:30 that Friday night and then again at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at New Glarus High School.

FATSOMETER: 7. Firm those tummy muscles with a bout of post-schnitzel yodeling.
