HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Hot locavore breakfast returns to the Dane County Farmers' Market this Saturday

The Dane County Farmers' Market draws out significantly fewer go-getters on Saturday mornings during the winter, when it scales down and moves into the Madison Senior Center (330 W. Mifflin St.). Luckily, it does offer the one thing that can get people to willingly leave their beds and trudge through the freeze: A hot, locally sourced breakfast that changes from week to week, and will return at this Saturday's market. Even when the local produce options are reduced to potatoes, potatoes, cheese, potatoes, and jerky, the rotating cast of local chefs preparing the meal always manages to deliver.

This Saturday, Josh Perkins from the Willy Street Co-op (1221 Williamson St., 608-251-6776) plans to start the day with a Southern-inflected breakfast of scrambled eggs and ham with sawmill gravy; cheese grits; a sweet potato, spinach, and hickory-nut casserole; and mixed berry mini-muffins. Breakfasts are $7.50 each (and only $3.75 for kids) and include coffee and apple cider. Though the schedule isn't completely locked down yet, upcoming weeks will feature breakfasts prepared by Underground Catering, L’Etoile (25 N. Pinckney St., 608-251-0500), and the local chapter of Slow Food. The breakfasts often sell out, especially when Tory Miller of L’Etoile is in the kitchen (probably because it's the most affordable meal he makes all year), so its best to arrive earlier rather than later. Breakfasts continue through April 10; market moves back out to the Capitol Square on on April 17.
