Belly Up It’s finally getting cold, so let’s pack on the pounds with a hearty breakfast

Another year breaks upon us with a sheeting of ice and snow, glorious sunlight breaking across a glimmering and foggy winter day. With this fresh mental framework of balance and poise comes an urge to stop being such a pig, shoveling in desiccated, heat-lamp-withered flesh from Arby’s and Chinese take-out food lousy with low-quality chicken from super-scary mega-farms. Yes! It’s time to mark off the new year by eating a healthy meal from Wisconsin’s wonderful local farms, and the Winter Dane County Farmers’ Market is just the ticket. The justly praised agora kicks off another year on Jan. 7 with a special “Taste of the Market” breakfast at the Madison Senior Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The breakfast menu looks freakin’ awesome: Snug Haven Farm spinach, egg, and Hook’s aged cheese pie; sweet potato and carrots from Driftless Organics and the excellent vendor Don’s Produce; sausage from Pecatonica Valley Farm; toast with fresh fruit jam from Sutters Ridge; and fresh apple cider from Ela Orchard. And the price is right: $8, $4 for kids.

FATSOMETER: 7. Wake up with a cup of hot fresh-ground Just Coffee coffee and then proceed to demolish a robust cheese-egg-and-sausage based—but still quite healthy—locally sourced breakfast.
